Why was the Civil War Started?

Dear reader, as a southern native, I can tell you on the simplest of terms: We wanted the right to own slaves and the wise people of the north thought better of it. Their party won the election and we didn’t like it. Sound familiar? Southern folks of the day had a lot riding on slavery. Crops depended on the labor – not all plantations were run with whips and chains. The southerners of the day were fighting for their livelihoods, albeit wrong and demeaning to their dark-skinned brethren. Sadly, even with decades of progress in the Civil Rights Movement, there are still some that see things the old fashioned way. Terrifying as it is, as Americans, they still have the right to their beliefs.
