Why is the South Called Dixie?

Southerners as well as Northerners know where the term originated from. But many ‘theories’ exist as to how the term came about. One such theory is that a former slave owner named Johan Dixie or Dixy relocated to the south when slavery was abolished in the north. Another theory is that Mr. Dixy was a very kindly slave owner and that the slaves referred to his land as ‘dixieland’.
