Why is Rhode Island Called An Island?

Rhode Island is called an island, but the official name is even longer than that; ‘The state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations’. Phew, that’s a mouthful! It came about because of a slight misunderstanding of a comment made by the explorer, Verrazzano, in which he likened Block Island, which is close by, to Rhodes in Greece.
