Why is New York City Called the Big Apple?

Why NY is called ‘The Big Apple’ has been a very popular question with many different stories around it. In the 1920’s a man named John Fitzgerald actually coined the phrase from all of the racing tracks around the city. Apple was in reference to the prizes for the winners, Fitxgerald heard the phrase supposedly from the jockeys coming from new orleans that worked to race the track in the city. Later on after that the phrase was brought up again in the 30’s by jazz musicians and again in the 70’s to help bring in tourism.
