Why is Meiosis Important?

Meiosis is the process by which the number of chromosomes in a cell is cut in half and thus producing gametes It plays key role in sexual reproduction. Since the gamete/cell’s chromosome only have half of the chromosomes, having 2 gametes (the egg and the sperm) fuse will result in the original amount of chromosomes. Imagine that there were no meiosis, then the fusion of the sperm and the egg will result in twice the amount of chromosomes, which means that you will have 4 eyes, 2 mouths, 2 hearts, etc.! That’s it, IF such a thing happens, which is naturally impossible because nature will prevent it to even fully reproduce (i.e., the fetus/embryo will die).
