Why do Skunks Stink?

There are approximately 12 skunk species, known as the common skunk, polecat or wood pussy. According to scientists, seven compounds make up skunk musk; the main ingredient is called thiols (created by decomposing proteins). Two compounds responsible for the strong smell are butene-1-thiol and methy-1-butanethiol. Two glands on the skunk’s anus, sometimes spraying as far as 15 feet, produce the musk.
