Why do People Bully Others?

This is a great and important question, thanks for asking! While I’m not a psychologist, I believe that people bully others because they are insecure in themselves and their own identity. Being insecure, they try and affirm their own worth or validity by asserting their power over others, as if control or domination of another or asserting social status somehow substituted for being comfortable with oneself. Bullies often lack the confidence to take emotional risks, to allow themselves the vulnerability to open up and make real, meaningful connections. All the great wisdom, religious, and spiritual traditions of the world teach love and care of our fellow people, and teach us to live with sensitivity, and to aid those who are bullied.
