Why do I Need a Preamp?

The purpose of a preamp is to:1: Switch between input signals (Wiring a CD player and a Cassette to play through the same speakers)2: Amplify phono inputs (used with turntables)3: Adjust volume4: Adjust treble and bass5: Present the correct output impedance (for hooking up more speakers than the system was otherwise designed to drive)6: Present a low input impedance at source (used when connecting several input devices like CD players and turntables)If your needs fall within one of these categories then yes you do need a preamp.
