Why Did Daylight Savings Time Start?

There are two different reasons why daylight savings time began. One is that by changing the clocks one hour we use 1% less energy each day. The second reason is that people enjoy having more daylight when they get off work to go out and enjoy the summer months with their families. Many countries that are closer to the equator and the days are about equal in length as far as daylight and night do not observe daylight savings time.
