Why be a Teacher?

Why be a teacher? A great an important question indeed! A teacher is an agent of education, but what does it mean to educate? The root of the word is actually quite insightful: the prefix ‘e’ in Latin means ‘out,’ and the root ‘duc’ means ‘to lead’, rendering ‘to lead out.’ In other words, the job of a teacher is to lead out a student’s inner person, his/her inner potential, aiding in the process of becoming one’s true self, and learning to live in the world as a whole person. Teachers, perhaps second only to parents, are essential in shaping students’ understanding of themselves, the world, and other people, and empowering them to be agents of change and co-creators of a better world.
