Why are People Named John Called Jack?

People named John are called Jack because it has been passed down through history. The French name for John is Jacques, pronounced ‘Jock’ more or less. Through misinterpretation of the language the name John became Jack and it has just become a tradition passed down. It’s quite certain that through processing at Ellis Island, many immigrants were mis-named or had their names completely changed due to the lack of ability to understand the immigrants native language.
