Linda Brown was a third grade student when she became famous. She is known because her parents went to court to fight for her right to attend an all white school. At the time schools were segregated and she had to walk more than a mile to school even though there were several schools all closer to her home but they were or white students only. The case was Brown v. Board of Education. The case was not won at the state level and the Brown’s combined with parents from other states who were bringing similar actions in their states and took their fight to the Supreme Court. It took the Supreme Court three years to make a determination but eventually ruled that there should be no segregation. Even with this ruling it took many states years to allow blacks and whites to attend the same school.
