Everyone who has worked within a given tax year is legally required to file taxes for that year. More often than not, workers are surprised to find that they do not actually owe any amount, or even that they are entitled to a refund. Paying taxes entitles us to unemployment when we lose our jobs, and also guarantees us social security benefits if we become disabled or when we retire. As many learned the hard way during this recent recession, working under the table leaves workers out in the cold when the job ends.
