Where does the Word Picnic Come from?

Although the origins of the word picnic are not known for certain, it is thought that picnic is a French word that originally referred to and event where people dined at a restaurant but brought their own bottle of wine. It later turned into an event where everyone brought food to share. In the Middle Ages, after a hunt, people would gather to eat, play cards and talk. It is believed our common idea of a picnic, or a meal eatten out of doors, is a combination of all these events.
