Where do Hamsters Come from?

Hamsters were first discovered in 1839 in the Syrian desert in the Middle East. They were thought to be extinct, but in 1930 a scientist in Syria found a nest with a female and 11 babies. Four of them lived, and the first hamsters were brought to England in 1931 and to the U.S. in 1938. They made good pets and by 1950 there were 100,000 golden hamsters in the U.S.
