When was New Orleans Founded?

The Big Easy was founded by the French on May 7, 1718. The city was named for the Regent of France at the time, Philippe II, Duke of Orleans. The French surrendered New Orleans to Spain in 1763 and it would remain under the control of Spain until 1801, when France took over again. Napoleon would then sell the territory to the U.S. in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase.
