When is the First Day of Autumn?

Many people wonder when the first day of autumn is. Autumn is a favorite time of year for a lot of people since seeing pretty fall colors is a rare treat. The air begins to get crispy and cool and for those of us who hate to mow the yard, we begin to get a break from that since the grass stops growing. The fall equinox or first day of autumn is on the day that night and day are of an equal time length. For 2009 this occurred on September 22nd. In 2010 and 2011 it will be on September 23rd. Then in 2012 and 2013 it will return back to September 22nd. This two year cycle repeats itself indefinitely with two years having 9/22 and two years have 9/23 as the first day of autumn.
