When is It too Late to Get Stitches?

Due to the way our bodies work, trying to get stitches any later than 12 hours after the initial injury is probably a waste of time. There is an increased risk for infection should you decide to wait it out and see if it stops bleeding or manages to start healing by itself. The longer you wait to get sewn up means there are going to be more and more bacteria attaching themselves to the wound and this can cause nasty infections. If you’re cut deeply enough that it’s worrying you, making a trip to the emergency room as soon as possible is the best thing to do.
