Dick and Mac McDonald opened their first McDonald’s restaurant in 1940. In 1948, they created what we know today as the first fast food restaurant. Ray Kroc opened the first franchised restaurant in Des Plaines, IL in 1955 and eventually bought out the McDonald Brothers for $2.7 million in 1961. Kroc built the foundation of McDonald’s with his aggressive business practices and amassed a $500 million fortune during is lifetime. McDonald’s now has over 31,000 restaurants in 119 countries and is home to the Big Mac and Ronald McDonald.
