What is the Eniac?

The ENIAC, or The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, was the first electronic computer. Completed in 1945, its first use was in performing calculations to help develop the hydrogen bomb. One feature of ENIAC that is particularly interesting is its size and complexity. It weighed 27 tons and contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7,200 crystal diodes, 1,500 relays, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, and approximately five million hand-soldered joints. The ENIAC was financed by the United States Army and was built at the University of Pennsylvania.
