Chile’s capital is Santiago. Founded in 1541 by Spanish discoverer Pedro Valdivia, Santiago got its name as a homage to Saint James and Extremadura, the explorer’s hometown.With an estimated population of 5,278,044 in 2009, the city is the largest in Chile and one of the most modern cities in South America. It is the industrial and economic capital of the country, generating around 45% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
