Joints in human body are covered by a membrane called synovium which secretes a fluid called synovial fluid. This fluid serves the purpose of lubricant between joints, and it also acts as a shock absorber and provides cushion effect. Synvisc is similar to synovial fluid and is used in osteoarthritis.
