Soul food (also known as southern food) is the food of the South. It includes a lot of pork, chicken, frying, and it makes use of every part of the animal and every piece of the plant. It is called soul food because food was often used to celebrate and bring families together. It was a time of happiness and thanksgiving. It is also said that the women who cook the food put their hearts and souls into it. Most soul food meals include some kind of fried pork, chicken, or fish (or all three), greens, cornbread, beans, rice, gravy, etc.
