What is Schistosomiasis?

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic infection that happens when people come in contact with contaminated water. The parasite burrows into the skin, and then moves to the liver or lungs to grow. When it is fully mature, the parasite then moves to the bladder, intestines or rectum. Schistosomiasis is not usually seen in the United States and occurs in tropical regions.
