What is RIP Rap?

The term rip rap is used to describe a means for a retainer and filter effect for water, usually along a river or shoreline to break down the impact of water having an erosive effect on a shoreline or seawall. Many times ‘throwaway’ materials are used to build them, and to provide a means to recycle them. There are many types of rip rap including concrete, rocks and old roadway materials, and they effectively filter the flow of the water, slowing down the progression of erosion.
