What is Prose?

Prose is ordinary written laguage. The plays of William Shakespeare are considered to be some of the world’s finest prose. The novels of Alice Walker are examples of beloved modern prose. Prose even includes the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. Prose is not limited to fiction. Anything written in language which many people can understand–including history and science–is considered to be prose. The term ‘prose’ comes from the Latin ‘prosa,’ which means ‘straightforward.’
