What is Port Forwarding?

Port forwarding is critical in network communications with the outside world. Your network is connected to a router which is the hub that controls all traffic coming in and going out of your network. The router has only one port coming in and going out but there are obviously multiple computers in the network that it must communicate with. There is normally software built into the router that will allow it to forward information to the right IP address or computer based on the port forwarding parameters set up by the software.
