What constitutes normalcy–what is normal–is a complicated issue. In terms of health, normalcy will be a state of good health, free of disease, with normal processes of aging. Mentally, normal is free of mental disease and defect, meeting a standard of mental health decided upon by mental health professionals. One should be aware that normal does not necessarily equate to being better than abnormal. For example, it is normal for a fifty-year-old to have wrinkles; but a 50-year-old free of wrinkles would hardly complain. Likewise, 100 is an average (or normal) IQ; yet no one with an IQ of 160 would cry over the news.
