What is Ballast Water?

Before ships set out to sail they take on a certain amount of water to help steady the ship. The water is full of biological life such as plankton and other living organisms. Once the ship is docked at its destination it releases the water into the current water system. The water that is released is full of life forms that are foreign to the current water system.
