What is An Absolute Phrase?

Absolute phrases can be kind of tricky. You need to remember an absolute phrase has a subject and then words that define or modify the subject. The purpose of the absolute phrase is to modity a sentence. For example, ‘Susannah was nervous’ is a sentence. To define that sentence you can add the absolute phrase ‘her mind a rollercoaster of emotion’. Absolute phrases are not sentences that can stand alone as they have no verb.
