What is a Riptide?

Believe it or not, a rip tide is not a tide at all it is a current. A riptide occurs when turbulent water caused by a current flows into another or across it. In order to get away from a riptide while in the ocean, you will need to swim parallel to the shore. If you are caught in one, try to relax and let the riptide carry you out to beyond the current and it will release you as it spreads out.
