What is a Nutria?

A nutria is a rodent about the size of a beaver, with a thin, long tail and webbed back feet. The nutria comes from South America, but was introduced to the United States for the fur industry. The nutria’s population boomed in the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic coast, and the Pacific Northwest, where they are considered invasive species because of the destruction they cause to wetlands.
