What is a Landman?

A landman is generally employed by an oil and gas company. This individual has many responsibilities which all surround oil and gas mineral properties and ownership rights. This person will help to ensure the company has a clear title or lease on the land before they begin the drilling process. They also determine which individuals may have mineral rights on the property and must contact each of these people and have them sign contract allowing the company to drill and extract the minerals. The landman makes sure there is a contract on file for each mineral owner and that the name and address information is correct. This is a very important position for ensuring all processes go smoothly when drilling begins.
