What is a Kwl Chart?

A KWL chart is a reading tool commonly used by elementary-level teachers in English-Language Arts classes. The acronym stands for ‘Know, Want to Know, Learned.’ Students are given the general topic of a book, such as, ‘This book is about trees.’ Students then list what they already know about trees, followed by what they want to know about trees. After reading the book, students write down what they learned about trees. KWL charts are an excellent way of helping students to realize how much their knowledge is expanded by books.
