What is a Barium Enema?

A barium enema is a type of test used by doctors to check for certain types of disease of the lower gastrointestinal tract. It involves injecting barium sulphate mix into the colon by way of the rectum so that an x-ray can be taken of the colon. The barium sulphate will show up white on an x-ray, so a dark spot may be a problem area may need to be investigated further. For more information see here:
