What do Chromosomes Look Like?

Chromosomes are thread like structures with dark and light bands,present inside the nucleus of the cell, comprising of DNA.They are the store house of genes .Each chromosome has a p(shorter) and q(longer) arm.Both the arms are separated by a pinched region known as centromere.A normal human cell comprise of 46 chromosomes(23 pairs).One set of 23 chromosomes are inherited from the biological father and the other set from the biological mother.In order to view the chromosomes under a microscope, it must be stained properly.The study of chromosomes is called Karyotype.
