What Did the Federalists Believe in?

The Federalists believed in a strong federal (national) government. During the debate over ratification of the United States Constitution, some wanted the states to retain the majority of power (Anti-Federalists), while others wanted the most power to be in the hands of the national government (Federalists). The Federalists won and the Constitution was ratified. This federation (and state versus federal power) was tested by the Civil War, and again, the side of federalism won.
