Jazz is truly an American art form with roots in our country’s earliest settlers and the influences of Native Americans. Jazz can be smooth and lyrical, melodic, frenetic, improvised, swung, tapped or beat. Dixieland Jazz got its start in Louisiana in the early 1900’s. Swing Jazz was popularized in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Bop was an up-beat jazz movement in the 1950’s followed by Cool Jazz and Jazz Fusion in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Each region has its own particular signature on the classic jazz form with hints of blues, ragtime, swing, funk and fusion.
