Whether or not you should become a teacher is a hard question for me to answer. I am a special education teacher by training. I think you should go into teaching with your eyes wide open or you will be disillusioned very quickly. As a special education teacher I found that I was doing government paperwork for 90% of my day and only 10% teaching kids. I finally had enough of that and work part-time as a tutor. That’s much more fun. As a teacher you will not be paid a professional-level salary. No other profession pays its master’s degreed employees $25,000 to start. And, contrary to common perception, you don’t just work 180 days, you work all year round, but you only get paid for 180 days. On the other hand, teaching the kids and watching the light bulb turn on in their heads is very rewarding. Good luck to you!
