To treat a sprain, it is essential that the person is receiving plenty of fluids to hydrate the tissues. Ibuprofen or a similar NSAID is recommended for swelling. Immediately after the injury, apply ice for 20-40 minutes every few hours for the first day or two. Elevating the injured body part above the heart can aslo reduce swelling. A bath with Epsom Salts may help reduce pain.
