You train a deaf dog in much the same way you train a spouse… with hand gestures and body language. In reality, dogs don’t speak our language so even hearing dogs rely more on visual information from their owners. Decide on what hand signals you will use for the different commands you want your deaf dog to follow. Make sure these signals are clear, consistent and easily distinguishable to the deaf dog. Most of all, praise your dog each time he correctly ‘reads’ your signal.
