First I wash and dry my turnips. Then, I shred the turnip leaves and dice up the roots. I fry a few pieces of bacon in a large pot until the fat is rendered, and then I had the turnip leaves. I fry the turnips until they begin to wilt. Then I add water and the turnip roots. I bring it all to a boil and then turn them down to simmer for about 3 hours or until the roots are tender.
