How to Make French Onion Soup?

To make French onion soup, melt 3 tablespoons of butter with a little olive oil. Add 5 cups of thinly sliced onions, cover and cook about 15 minutes until the onions are soft and browning. Add a pinch of salt and sugar, and stir in some flour. Add some chicken stock and simmer 30-45 minutes. The soup can be accessorized with a garlic crouton and some melted Gruyere cheese.
