In order to make very crusty and crunchy French bread, you can do a couple of things. First, you can ask your local bakery for the actual dough that they use to make the bread and bake it at home yourself. Once you get the dough home, take a spritzer and spritz it with water before you put it into the oven. After it has been baking for about three to five minutes spritz the dough again with water. If you own an electric oven you may throw in a handful of ice cubes or a half of a cup of water into a baking dish underneath the bread.
