It varies state by state. In the State of Louisiana where I live, it involves taking a test that is given two (2) times per year. The test that I took lasted for four (4) hours. Part of the test involves writing a will. Once you get notified that you have passed the test, you must obtain a $10,000.00 bond that must be renewed every five (5) years. Louisiana notaries can do just about everything that an attorney can do except for go to court or give legal advice. Notaries in Louisiana have more powers than notaries in other states. A Notary Commission in Louisiana never expires.
