How Long does It Take to Become a Plastic Surgeon?

The path to becoming a plastic surgeon is long, you will have to complete many levels of training. You’ll need to complete a Bachelor’s degree in a pre-med major such as biology or chemistry. A four-year medical degree, either M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical school is required. Following medical school will be 5-6 years of residence training. The first 3 years will be in general surgery and the following 2-3 years will be for your specialty in plastic surgery. You may decide, following your residency, that you want pursue a specialized fellowship to develop your skills in one specific area. So you are looking at a total of about 12-15 years for an awesome career that will last a lifetime.
