Some women are 1cm dilated for the entire last month of their pregnancy. Dilation of the cervix is sometimes a sign of impending labor, but is also a common reaction to the weight of a fully developed baby on your cervix. It is necessary to dilate to 10cm in order to deliver the baby. Changes in the cervix can be indications, but often they are not. Some women see no change or dilation until the day of labor.
