How Hurricanes are Named?

In 1953, The National Weather Service started naming hurricanes after women. The hurricanes were named after girlfriends, wives, and one was even named after former first lady, Bess Truman. In 1953, men’s names were added to the list. Now, the World Meteorological Organization names the storms that are compiled into six different lists. Each year, the storm season starts out with an A-name from a new list.
