How does Leukemia Affect the Body?

Leukemia is the failure of the white blood cells (leukocytes) to mature normally and the reason this occurs is unknown at this time. Normal mature leukocytes cannot reproduce so they eventually die and must be replaced. The leukemic cells can reproduce but they do not possess the ability to fight against infection. As leukemia progresses the leukemic cells over time replace the normal leukocytes causing the body to become weaker and weaker and very vulnerable to infection.
