Essentially, global warming is melting the ice at the earth’s poles, along with various glaciers and snow on mountaintops. As this ice melts, sea levels rise. Scientists predict that if the current trend continues, the nation of Ireland, along with the southeastern United States, and other places worldwide will be submerged within 500 years. Many societies count on the regular yearly melt-off of glaciers and mountaintop snow to feed their rivers and provide drinking water. If water is no longer stored as ice on these mountains, these societies will be without drinking water.
